Best Time to Visit Sharm El Sheikh: Month-by-Month Guide

When to Visit Sharm El Sheikh: The Honest Guide

Sharm El Sheikh is blessed with one of the world's most consistent climates — over 360 sunny days per year, virtually no rain, and warm water year-round. But that doesn't mean every month is equal. Temperatures swing dramatically between summer highs of 42°C and winter lows of 15°C at night. Understanding when to visit depends on your priorities: heat tolerance, budget, crowds, and which activities matter most to you.

Peak Season: December to February

Winter is the busiest time in Sharm El Sheikh. Europeans, Russians, and Ukrainians flock here to escape cold winters, drawn by 20–22°C daytime temperatures and reliably sunny skies. The Red Sea is at its coolest (22–23°C) but still very comfortable with a 3mm wetsuit.

Pros: Perfect beach weather, excellent visibility for diving, vibrant atmosphere, European-standard facilities at their most polished.

Cons: Highest prices of the year (hotels often 30–50% more expensive than low season), most popular tours can sell out weeks in advance, Naama Bay can feel crowded, airport queues longer.

Tip: Book everything 4–6 weeks in advance if visiting in December or January. The Sinai Explorer bundle and Ras Mohammed day trips fill up fast.

Shoulder Season: March to May and October to November

The shoulder seasons offer the best combination of good weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices. October and November in particular are becoming known among experienced travelers as the "secret" best months in Sharm.

October–November: Days are warm (26–32°C), the water is still summer-warm (25–27°C), and the European summer crowd has gone. Hotels often offer significant discounts. Desert activities like the Coloured Canyon and Mount Sinai night hike are very comfortable at these temperatures.

March–April: Spring in Sinai is delightful. Temperatures are rising but haven't yet hit the extreme summer highs. Water is at its clearest (23–24°C), wildflowers bloom briefly in the desert, and school holidays in Russia/Poland drive a moderate crowd.

Low Season: June to September (Summer)

Summer in Sharm El Sheikh is seriously hot. Air temperatures regularly hit 40–42°C, and while air conditioning everywhere makes resort life comfortable, outdoor activities become challenging in the midday heat. That said, summer has its own appeal:

  • Manta rays: The plankton bloom of summer brings manta rays to Ras Mohammed (June–September), a once-in-a-lifetime diving and snorkeling experience.
  • Lowest prices: Hotel rates and tour prices can be 40–60% lower than peak season. It's possible to stay at 5-star resorts for remarkable value.
  • Warm water: 28–30°C water requires no wetsuit and allows comfortable snorkeling for longer periods.
  • Fewer crowds: The main beach areas and restaurants are noticeably quieter.

Avoid: Desert excursions (Sinai Safari, Coloured Canyon) in July and August peak heat. Mount Sinai at night remains possible as the summit is cooler, but desert jeep tours in 42°C are uncomfortable.

Best Time for Specific Activities

  • Diving: October–May (best visibility, comfortable temperatures, most marine life)
  • Snorkeling: Year-round, best water clarity October–May
  • Manta Ray Encounters: June–September at Ras Mohammed
  • Desert Safari (Coloured Canyon, jeep adventures): October–April only
  • Mount Sinai Hike: October–March (comfortable desert temperatures)
  • Budget Travel: May–June and September–October (best value)
  • Families with school-age children: March–April or October (school holidays in many countries)

Holiday Periods to Be Aware Of

  • Christmas/New Year (Dec 24–Jan 3): Most expensive and crowded period. Book 2–3 months ahead.
  • Russian Orthodox Christmas (Jan 7): Second significant peak, especially for Russian tourists.
  • Egyptian national holidays: Sinai Liberation Day (April 25) and national holidays bring domestic Egyptian tourists, adding to crowds.
  • Ramadan: Dates shift each year. During Ramadan, some local restaurants close during daylight hours, nightlife is muted, but tourist facilities operate normally. It can actually be a peaceful and interesting time to visit.

Our Recommendation

For the overall best experience — weather, value, and activities — we recommend October or November. You get summer-warm water, comfortable air temperatures, autumn pricing, and empty beaches. Second choice: March or April for spring warmth and good conditions.

Whatever month you choose, Sharm El Sheikh rarely disappoints. The combination of guaranteed sunshine, world-class reef, and outstanding hospitality makes it one of the most forgiving destinations on Earth.
